Domain name expiration and renewals

When does your domain expire?

Domain names are registered for a minimum term of one year, up to ten years. The domain will expire at exactly the end of the term that you have paid for. Some domain name extensions require a minimum of two years.

Can you automatically renew it for me?

Yes. During registration, if you chose the "Please automatically renew it" option, our system will attempt to charge your credit card for the domain's renewal 15 days before expiration. If you have sufficient credit in your account, then our billing system will use such credit to pay for the renewal.

If for some reason your credit card is declined, you will have ample time to update your billing information via our Client Portal.

What happens if your domain expires?

When a domain expires, its DNS will no longer resolve to your original settings. ServerPoint may replace those DNS settings with one that will redirect any visitor to your website to a special page indicating that the domain has expired.

How do I get the domain to work again after it expired?

Just visit our Client Portal and pay for an additional term. We strongly recommend that you pay for up to ten years in order to avoid the possibility that your domain expires.

However, if more than 30 days have passed since expiration, your domain will enter the Redemption Period.

Redemption period

After 30 days of expiration, your domain will enter the redemption period, which usually lasts for 30 days. During this time, recovering your domain will incur a fee of up to $200 USD, plus the cost of renewal.

And what happens after the redemption period?

Your domain becomes available again and can be sold. Be aware that most of the time, domains that were in use before are quickly purchased by someone else in order to catch some of the traffic such domain name used to have before it expired.

Renewal price

The renewal price of a domain, that is not in the Redemption Period, is the same as just registering a new domain.

Bulk transfers

Notifications via email

ServerPoint will notify you via email several times before the domain approaches expiration. These notifications will be sent 30 days and 5 days before expiration.

The notification will inform you if auto-renewal is enabled for this domain. If so, you do not have to do anything at that time.

However, if we attempt to renew your domain automatically 15 days before expiration and we are unable to charge your credit card or deduct from your account's credit, you will also get a notification.

Notifications via our Client Portal

When you log in to our Client Portal, you may also see notifications, at the top of the interface, about any domains that are about to expire or if we haven't been able to collect payment to renew one of your domains that are set to auto-renew.

Notices via other methods of communication

ServerPoint reserves the right to reach you through other methods if we feel it is necessary, such as via SMS, IP based chat programs such as WhatsApp, via our ticket system or via phone.

We may do this if we feel that perhaps you are not getting our notices via email.

This may not always be the case though, as this would be a manual process and greatly depends on availability of our staff.
