Ubuntu LTS on Linux VPS hosting: which version to choose

Ubuntu LTS on Linux VPS hosting

We’ve offered Ubuntu on our Linux VPS hosting platform for over a decade, and we keep multiple LTS versions available so you can deploy the one your application is tested and built on.

Why LTS matters for VPS hosting

Ubuntu releases a new version every six months, but only the LTS (Long Term Support) releases get five years of security patches and bug fixes. For a production Linux VPS, LTS is the right choice. You deploy your server, set up your application, and you know that security updates will keep coming for years without forcing you to do an OS migration.

Non-LTS releases only get nine months of support. That’s fine for testing new features, but on a production virtual server, you don’t want to be forced into an OS upgrade every nine months.

Which version to choose

For new deployments, use the latest Ubuntu LTS. It has the newest kernel, the latest package versions, and the longest remaining support window. If you have an existing application that’s been tested on a specific LTS version, deploy that version instead; we keep previous LTS releases available.

You can check Ubuntu’s release cycle page for exact support dates.

Alternatives

Ubuntu isn’t the only option on our Linux VPS hosting platform. We also offer:

  • AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux: RHEL-compatible distributions, great for enterprise workloads and cPanel hosting
  • Debian: The upstream distribution Ubuntu is based on, known for stability and minimalism

All of these are available at all six data centers (Las Vegas, Dallas, Ashburn, Santa Clara, Amsterdam, Singapore) on SSD-backed VPS hosting with full root access.
